The sculpture, designed by Jack Maxwell, depicts the story of Jacob and calls us to realize the relationship we can have with God. "In the sculpture itself, four angels--each representing the four corners of the earth and the limitless reach of God--climb the rungs of a ladder that appears to be suspended in space. The angels appear younger the farther they are from earth, implying the fallen state of the earth, corrupted by sin....The lowest angel angel reaches down with one bare foot, and directly beneath the ladder is a flat stone, reminding visitors of the stone upon which Jacob slept and encouraging emulation of his posture."
