A major tragedy has hit our state. Our Congresswoman, Gabriel Giffords, and 18 other people were shot here today. They had come together in an informal meeting known as "Congress on the Corner" to talk about their concerns and issues face to face with their elected official. It was intended to be a peaceful way of discussing ideas. Instead, it turned into a war zone, leaving 6 dead, 5 in critical condition, 5 hospitalized and others needing medical treatment.
And now, the word on everyone's lips is "Pray." From the President of our country to the television reporter, each person is saying or quoting someone who is saying that we need to pray for the victims and their families. Public officials are saying it's time to take a hard look at the words that get hurled in campaigns. Words that attack candidates like the bullets that sprayed through the air today. Violent thoughts and words do give birth to violent actions.
Praying should not be saved for a crisis. It should be as natural for us as breathing. The Lord exhorts us in His word to pray for each other but especially for those who have been elected to governmental positions.
"I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." 1Timothy 2:1&2 NIV
Perhaps if we rend our hearts and place prayer for all those in authority on our lips daily, there would be fewer tragedies in our country. May the meditations of our hearts and the words of our lips be pleasing to the Lord (Psalm 19:14).
As I was reading through comments about today's tragedy, I saw a quote that perfectly fits such a time as this:
"I believe with all my heart that standing up for America means standing up for the God who has so blessed our land. We need God's help to guide our nation through stormy seas. But we can't expect Him to protect America in a crisis if we just leave Him over on the shelf in our day-to-day living.” ~ Ronald Reagan, President
